Book Review

Never Let Me GoNever Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

Very interesting story. I wasn't sure what to expect as this was my first time reading anything by Kazuo Ishiguro, but I definitely plan to read more of his work.

Intrigued me from the beginning, which is always a good thing and kept me fascinated throughout. A page turner, and I normally don't like sci-fi type books. It reminded me of a brave new world in that it was set in a different time. But it wasn't obvious, i.e. no flying spaceships. The subject matter was quite believable given the current medical knowledge that exists. I definitely recommend it.

This was recently made into a movie so I am curious to see the adaptation.

Book Review

Stolen Innocence: My Story of Growing Up in a Polygamous Sect, Becoming a Teenage Bride, and Breaking Free of Warren Jeffs by Elissa Wall

My friend gave me this book and it was definitely interesting. Her story is sad, funny, and memorable. It has a very conversational feel, while reading you could almost picture her sitting with you telling the story. There are some minor descriptions of rape/abuse but it's very brief and not at all graphic. But definitely has adult material and themes throughout.

She begins as a very young child and tells the story of her life growing up in a fundamentalist sect of the Church of Latter Day Saints. It gives you an interesting peek into a world often veiled from outsiders and the story is not all negative. You really get a feel for the strong family ties she and her siblings forge despite being one of fourteen children. Without giving away too much, the book ends on a positive note which is refreshing.

Overall I give the book a B+. It held my interest from the beginning and I read it quickly because I wanted to see the end.
